Farming with Barn Owls in BC

Adapting to a changing climate, August 2022: Thanks to help from the Cascade Box Group and John Vissers we have retrofitted barn owl boxes with a white reflective roofing that will lower the temperature in the nest boxes.  Unfortunately, one third of the owlets monitored last year died during the heat dome due to heat exhaustion.

As a result the Cascade Box Group went into action and trialled various roofing products and found that a white rubber roofing and retrofitting existing boxes with a white metal sheet roofing would reduce the temperature in the boxes 3-4 Celsius. Retrofitting boxes paid off as we have had no casualties this year.

If you are a farmer and you are interested in a barn owl box - please contact me.
